Botox
Botulinum toxin is a neuro toxic protein which is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and its related species. Originally utilized for the treatment for Strabismus as it has a special effect of relaxing the peripheral muscles by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine which is a neurotransmitter and transmits the impulses for the muscles to contract. Basically it blocks the signal from the nerve to the muscle. As a result of this effect, it is one of the most popular aesthetic treatment performed worldwide today, as it tends to relax the dynamic wrinkles that occur along with the ageing process.
It is injected directly into the muscle to relax and diminish the wrinkles occurring as forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, bunny lines, cobblestone appearance of chin, gummy smile and hypertrophied masseter muscle. It is also utilized for various therapeutic conditions like trigeminal neuralgia, migraine, Frey’s syndrome, strabismus, blepharospasm etc.
The effect of the Botulinum Toxin lasts for about 4 – 6 months, but in some patients the effect may go upto 9 months also.
